Color Dosing for Extrusion

Pipe, profile, sheet, film and filament lines all take color at the extruder throat, and the mechanical fit is the same one MegaColor was designed for. What is different is the process — so this page tells you what we know and what we would have to measure.

Where the unit goes

  • Mounts on the extruder throat in place of the original hopper, the same way it mounts on an injection machine
  • Throat interface 115 × 115 mm or 155 × 155 mm
  • Power AC 220V single phase, 50 Hz; compressed air 0.5–0.6 MPa, dry and oil-free
  • Dosing is enclosed, so pigment does not drift along the line
  • Both color powder and masterbatch are dosed by the same machine — one component is swapped between them

Why extrusion is not injection molding

  • An extruder draws material continuously; an injection machine draws it shot by shot
  • Our measured dosing consistency was taken under injection molding conditions, over 200-plus consecutive doses
  • We do not extrapolate those figures to extrusion. Different draw behaviour means the measurement has to be repeated, not converted
  • Filament and other precision extrusion lines are a case in point — tight diameter and color tolerances deserve data from the line itself

So we would rather trial than quote. Send us the resin and the pigment from your line, tell us the loading ratio and the target you have to hold, and we run it. The numbers that come out are from your material on our machine — not a figure borrowed from a different process. There is no charge for this step.

What carries across from injection molding

The process differs, but several things about the machine do not depend on how material is drawn.

Holds true on any line

  • Pigment is dosed at the throat, so a pre-blended batch cannot separate on the way to the machine
  • Powder loading 0.1%–5%, masterbatch 1%–10%
  • Fully enclosed, so the dust of open blending is not there to inhale or to contaminate the next run
  • Recipes stored and recalled on the unit
  • Changeover on the 5th Generation is a 1-minute hopper swap
  • Color powder costs materially less per tonne of product than masterbatch and can be mixed the same day from pigment you hold

Has to be measured on your line

  • Dosing consistency under continuous draw
  • Whether your loading ratio suits the fine-gear or the coarse-gear metering set
  • Behaviour at very low loading, near 0.1%
  • Throughput matching between the doser and your extruder output

Run a trial on your own material

We would rather produce data from your line than quote a number from another process.
